DAPP Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Day of Education running under the theme, “Changing Course, Transforming Education”. The day is celebrated in the wake of Covid -19 which has greatly disrupted the education sector and other sectors in general due to lockdowns.
Celebrated annually on the 24th of January, DAPP Zimbabwe acknowledges the importance of inclusive and equitable access to quality education to improve youth employability, reduce poverty and achieve socio-economic development.
Our pledge
DAPP pledges to play its role in supporting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goal 4 which aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. DAPP through Ponesai Vanhu Technical College promotes skills development for girls, youth from low income backgrounds and youths living with disabilities through offering short and long term practical courses. The courses on offer were designed after an extensive market research to ensure skills match labour market demand and realities.
The reality on the ground
Like many institutions around the world, PVTC faced many challenges including school closures. To ensure delivery of education during the Covid -19 pandemic PVTC adopted alternatives learning platforms such as online platforms and smaller learning groups. However, the hands-on practical skills trainings as well as work based training were affected due to nationwide lockdowns leading to delays in completion of courses and student drop outs.

Looking to the future, DAPP Zimbabwe envisions a world where Governments, Education sector players, Private sector and Policy makers and other key players comes together to share knowledge, experiences and best practices to build resilience against future shocks and mitigate COVID-19 impacts. Our vision is to see youths from margined remote parts of the country have equitable access to TVET for all programs through Public Private Partnerships.

Ponesai Vanhu Technical College (PVTC) in partnership with Chaminuka Vocational Training Centre (Cham tech ) have introduced the TVET for all through Public -Private partnership in Zimbabwe program. The pilot project is expected to equip benefit 400 youths from disadvantaged backgrounds with market ready skills which are critical for income generating and job security.
In order to meet the ever-changing work environment the privately run PVTC and public run Cham Tech will benefit from the development of a new curriculum that will strengthen skills development systems that improve employability of disadvantaged groups in Zimbabwe. The new curriculum developed with the assistance of Bindura University of Science education, will align with market demands.
The 400 beneficiaries who include 25 youth disabilities and 200 young women will go through the 8 month training course which will be divided into in-class learning and on the job training to allow students to acquire on the job experiences, knowledge, skills and appropriate attitude to work. The pilot program will also assist students in the transition into the formal and informal workforce though linkages with business, government and financial institutions.
The ENABEL funded 2 year project which started in November 2019 will be implemented with DAPP as the lead Partner, and Chaminuka Vocational Training Center and Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe as co-applicants, Bindura University of Science Education and Higher Life Foundation as Associates.

Youth unemployment remains a challenge in Sub Saharan Africa and is regarded as a key driver of poverty. In Zimbabwe the number of unemployed youths continues to grow due to a myriad of economic challenges that has seen industries and companies closing.
The fight against poverty remains at the heart of DAPP Zimbabwe programming. Through vocational training at Ponesai Vanhu Technical College youths are equipped with the necessary knowledge and practical skills necessary for them to earn a decent living and be a part of stimulating economic growth.
PVTC vocational training is well known for developing occupational competencies in the flagship courses in Motor Mechanics, Business studies and Brick and Block laying. The college also offers three months short courses in Brick and Block Laying, Catering, Garment Making and Beauty Therapy in response to the current economic changes that do make access to training difficult for many.
Ponesai Vanhu Technical College lives up to its name “Ponesai Vanhu” (Help People ) in ensuring that young Zimbabweans create sustainable self employment opportunities to overcome poverty and become contributors to the country’s economy. Due to its focus on careers based training for enterprise (TFE), Ponesai Vanhu Technical College equips individuals with innovative skills which enable them to set up their own businesses.
Ponesai Vanhu Technical College remains non-discriminatory in that it promotes quality vocational training for young women and girls. This is in line with the country’s gender equality drive to see equal access to opportunities. One of the girls said” We are being seen participating and thriving in traditionally male dominated fields such as motor mechanics”.
As we commemorate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, DAPP Zimbabwe calls on young people not to wait around for government to create jobs but to enroll in vocational institutions such as PVTC to liberate themselves from the effects of poverty.
